This photo was displayed in the entryway at Terra Uchi for many years, and is now in the entry of JLH's apartment. It's quite large at 54" x 33".
This was taken at one of the top five parks in Japan around 1969. We had been in the park for several hours and RTH was trying to get photos of these kids playing on the equipment. The teachers kept telling the kids "Don't stare at the foreigners." Finally RTH made a big production of putting away his camera gear but kept the camera around his neck under his coat. As we left they all ran down the path to wave goodbye...

Self-Portrait (repost)
I've posted this photo before , but it seemed a nice one to end with. I've come to the end of the material that I want to share he...
In memory of Dick Hibbert (1933-2010), I am posting selections from his art. He painted in oil, was an avid photographer, did watercolors, and sketched in pencil, ink, and charcoal. You can send me email by addressing it to my first name at mydruthers.com. --Chris

Persimmon leaves (Painting)
This is an oil painting (29" x 36"), which we have hanging in our house. It is based on the persimmon tree in the yard of the house where we lived in Zushi from 12/66 to 2/68. I have a slide that looks very similar to this image, though RTH intended the painting to be seen as an abstract representation of fall colors. We have a large persimmon tree here, so it doesn't feel at all abstract to me.
I don't remember the persimmon trees in Japan, but I do remember that persimmons were common in Japanese folk tales, playing about the same role as apples in western stories.

storefront (untitled charcoal sketch)
Unidentified storefront. From the shape of the windows and the shopper in the lower right, it looks like a Japanese scene to me. RTH took lots of photos of shopfronts in Zushi in 1967-1968, and this could be from then, but I haven't identified a specific source.

Bangkok street food (photo)
RTH and JLH took a trip to Bangkok in 1969. This kid is selling roasted cockroaches. Don't knock 'em if you haven't tried 'em.

Silhouette with teapot (photo)
This photo was taken around 1956 in Tokyo. JLH has it hanging in her apartment. RTH and his (unidentified) shipmate were arranging for a photo album for their ship. Next to the man, a hibachi with the teapot is visible.

Beached Rowboat (untitled watercolor)
I did my best to remove the shadows from paper curl, but you can still see it. The vertical stripes above the hills, and above the water are less visible in the original, but I coudn't find a way to remove them in scanning.

Shadows on stairsteps (photo)
This is the Kintai Bridge, in Iwakuni, Japan. RTH took many different pictures of this bridge. When I received the set of scans that included this photo, this one was sideways. It took a little while to identify the subject.
